It is the responsibility of competitors and teachers to follow the Rules & Regulations of the Festival. Entries are the responsibility of competitors and teachers. Errors or omissions are not the responsibility of the Festival. All disciplines run at the discretion of the Festival, dependent on sufficient entries. These rules apply to Penticton Festival Only – Provincial Rules Vary

Additional rules pertaining to Musical Theatre:

 

  1. Musical Theatre entries are own choice selections from any musical, Broadway musical, or motion picture musical including animated musicals unless otherwise stated as in selections from a Cabaret/Revue genre.
  2. Costumes and movement are permitted but not necessary, as is limited stage movement and dancing if appropriate. One stage prop and one hand-held prop may be used AND must be set up and struck by the PERFORMER.
  3. The performance will be adjudicated as a total program with voice, acting, characterization, movement, staging and appropriate costuming all being taken into consideration.
  4. The source of the selection must be listed on the entry form (example – “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun” from Annie Get Your Gun by Irving Berlin) or entry will not be accepted.
  5. No opera or operetta is accepted in this section.
  6. School Choir groups, doing musical theatre, will still enter under the Choral section of the Syllabus
  7. To be considered for the Provincial classes in Musical Theatre, competitors must enter at least two classes from Comedy, Ballad, Additional Repertoire, Production or Cabaret. 
  8. Classes will be subdivided by age.
  9. Non-competitive solo classes are for participants who are NOT entered in competitive solo classes.
  10. Candidates must enter at least two solo categories to be eligible for an award. See Scholarship  Page .
  11. Selections must have appropriate/acceptable language and content that is suitable for ALL AGE LEVELS OF PARTICIPANTS AND AUDIENCES.

 

          

Competitive Classes

All competitors will be given an adjudication and a mark for each performance and will be eligible for appropriate certificates, cups, awards and/or scholarships

Non-competitive Classes

All competitors will be given an adjudication only.

Adult

A student of any level, 29 years and over

Solo Classes, All Ages 

$16.00

Duo, Trio, Quartet  $9.00 per person 

Groups, All Ages  $25.00

Production Class, All Ages  $21.00

MUSICAL THEATRE CATEGORIES

Comedy Class – A musical theatre song from all the genres listed in the Additional Rules #1. This selection must be of a comedic nature. Piano accompaniment only.

Ballad Class – A Musical Theatre song from any of the genres listed in Additional Rules #1 that is serious and of an introspective nature. No comedy selections permitted. Piano accompaniment only.

Additional Repertoire - One own choice selection of Musical Theatre Comedy or Musical Theatre Ballad. Piano accompaniment only.

Production Class – No Novice entries in this class. The performer is to present a program of 2 contrasting selections taken from different or the same musical – in any of the genres listed in Additional Rules #1. The adjudication will be based on the total entertainment quality of the performance (vocal and character portrayal). Selections must not have been used in any other musical theatre class. Time limit 6½ minutes. Piano accompaniment only. Solo performances only allowed in this class.

Motion Picture Theme Song – Title selection taken from a motion picture (Non-musical Theatre) sung in a straight solo style only. Example: “My Heart Will Go On” from the Motion Picture Titanic. No props, costumes or movement permitted. Piano accompaniment only. No microphones. Solo performances  only.

Cabaret Class-A selection from a Cabaret, Revue or a similar genre Collection.

Workshop Class – This is a group class, with the Musical Theatre adjudicator to assist you in enhancing your skills and Performance. TBA

JUNIOR A ages 10 and under JUNIOR B ages 14 & under
SOLO PERFORMER
Classes will be subdivided by age. Age must be on entry form.

INTERMEDIATE ages 15-18
SOLO PERFORMER
Classes will be subdivided by age.  Age must be on entry form.

SENIOR (age 19 and over)
SOLO PERFORMER
Classes will be subdivided by age   Age must be on entry form.

 
MUSICAL THEATRE DUET, TRIO, QUARTET, OR ENSEMBLE
PLEASE LIST THE SOURCE OF SELECTIONS AFTER THE TITLE ON THE ENTRY FORM
Please ensure that age is on the entry form.

One entry form per performance, with all singers’ names, accompanied by full entry fee. If competitors are different ages, they shall compete at the higher age level.


NON-COMPETITIVE MUSICAL THEATRE CATEGORIES

Non-competitive performances will receive an adjudication only. These classes will only take place once the competitive section is completed and Provincial Representatives and Award Winners have been selected. Age groups are Junior, 14 years and under, Intermediate, 15 - 18 years and Senior, 19 years and over. Categories as above.
